Finland’s presidency at the Council of the European Union

Finland’s presidency at the Council of the European Union begun on 1 July 2019. 

The priorities for Finland’s Presidency are the following: 
•    to strengthen common values and the rule of law
•    to make the EU more competitive and socially inclusive
•    to strengthen the EU’s position as a global leader in climate action
•    to protect the security of citizens comprehensively

The Council of the European Union is where the governments of the EU Member States are represented by government ministers
of the Member States. The presidency of the Council rotates among the EU member states every 6 months. During this 6-month period,
the presidency chairs meetings at every level in the Council, helping to ensure the continuity of the EU's work in the Council.
Furthermore, the presidency represents the Council in relations with the other EU institutions. 

From January to June 2020 the presidency at the Council of the European Union will be held by Croatia and then from July to December 2020 – by Germany
