Two universities from the South of Poland awarded in “European Universities” alliances call

On 26 June 2019, the European Commission announced the results of the first edition of “European Universities” alliances call. Out of 54 applications received, 17 European Universities were selected, involving 114 higher education institutions.

Five Polish universities were awarded - inlcuding two univeristes from partner region of the South Poland House in Brussels, namely Uniwersytet Jagiellonski and Uniwersytet Opolski. Seventeen new multi-university alliances will get €5 million each to develop joint degrees. “These new alliances can be role models, making education more attractive and inclusive for the next generation of students,” said Tibor Navracsics, EU Commissioner for Education. The EU scheme stems from the proposal in 2017 by French president Emmanuel Macron to create 20 cross border university networks.

The second round of the competition is planned for autumn.
